Two zodiacs, one sky

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Because Earth’s axis slowly wobbles (precession), the two drift apart by about 1° every 72 years. That gap, the ayanamsa, is now about 24°. So a Saturn at 10° Aries in a Western chart sits near 16° Pisces (Meena) in a Vedic one.

Astrologers disagree slightly on the exact offset. Lahiri is the standard in India; B. V. Raman’s value (the default in the VedAstro API) is about 1½° smaller; Krishnamurti (KP) sits in between. Your result page lets you switch between all three.

Shani in Jyotish

Shani is the karaka (significator) of time, discipline, endurance, service, detachment and longevity. Classical texts describe him as slow and exacting but fair: he tests, and he rewards sincere effort. He is traditionally linked with Saturday.

  • Own signs: Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius); moolatrikona in Kumbha 0°–20°.
  • Exalted in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20°; debilitated in Mesha (Aries).
  • Friends: Mercury and Venus. Enemies: Sun, Moon and Mars. Neutral: Jupiter.
  • Nakshatras ruled: Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.
  • Vimshottari dasa: Saturn’s major period lasts 19 years.

Sade Sati, without the fear

Sade Sati means “seven and a half.” It is the roughly 7½ years while Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the sign after. Its reputation can be frightening, but many astrologers describe it as a demanding season of maturing: clearing out what no longer fits, taking on real responsibility, and building something that lasts.

Two shorter transits get similar attention: Saturn in the 4th and 8th signs from the Moon (each about 2½ years, sometimes called dhaiya). Your result page calculates your own Sade Sati dates when your birth time is known.

The 27 nakshatras

Each sign is split further into lunar mansions of 13°20′, each with four padas (quarters). The nakshatra of your natal Saturn adds a finer layer of meaning in Jyotish.
